BREAKING NEWS, STOP PRESS: TTC IS ON STRIKE!!!!

with 5 comments

THIS JUST IN: after voting on the new deal for the TTC, the union has willingly rejected a new deal, about 65% have rejected. While many people are worried that a strike won’t happen – chances are that the strike is going to be on the road, as planned.

Bob Kinnear, president of the ATU local 113 has this statement: “We have assessed the situation and decided that we will not expose our members to the dangers of assaults from angry and irrational members of the public. The reports from our members of increases in threats and abuse from passengers last weekend, after we gave our original 48-hours’ notice, has left us no choice but to withdraw our services immediately. We have a legal responsibility to protect the safety of our members and so does the TTC.”

The TTC will be striking as of midnight tonight. Luckily, it finally took place after many students (including myself) were in the midst of wrapping up exams. If you are still in the middle of writing one, good luck. You are going to put the extra burden with the strike. While some speculated that the strike should take place by now, others are bracing for impact.

I’m planning to head downtown tomorrow and to add further insult to injury, the weather is going to hamper plans as well. Luckily, I can simple walk across the underground pedestrian network also known as the “PATH”.

As for the new deal, it would have given a 3 per cent increase over the next three years. The news is vaguely fresh at the moment, but I’ll keep you guys posted throughout tomorrow to explain all the details.

  1. I am getting sick & tired of this nonsense. This problem keeps happening over & over again. WE as a public need to speakup about this BIG PROBLEM! PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IS A NECESSITY FOR ALL HUMAN BEINGS! Come on guys stop punishing us for your own GREED! If it weren’t for us you guys would be out of a job. If it’s not the fare increase it’s the frigging strike we have to worry about. We just can’t win can we? Maybe we should boycot using TTC and start using our cars again. Hmmm! That is a great thought. Perhaps I could use my TTC fare money to buy a new car and then this way I could get to work ONTIME and imagine getting home early too. And here you guys were looking for more riders support the TTC. I can see why people would rather drive than take the Terrible Transit Carrier. You guys are UNRELIABLE! So much for going GREEN & save the planet. Fooowee! Do you know how many people you are pissing off right now with your strike? ALOT! So don’t complain if there’s not enough riders on the TTC anymore ~ no riders no jobs guys ~ think about it. If nobody rides the TTC anymore you guys will be laid-off and won’t have us to support your sorry asses. Everybody has a job to go to so stop complaining and have a little sympathy for the poor transit riders ~ especially the low income, disabled & elderly who depend on you ~ think about them.
