And I won’t say anything at all… – Coping with the TTC Strike: Part 3
Continuation from Part 2 of “Coping with the TTC Strike”
Well guys, at exactly 1:30p.m. (Eastern Time) today, Queen’s Park will meet at an emergency session to end the TTC strike that took place early Friday night and well into yesterday. The province will introduce back-to-work legislation that will end the TTC Strike once and for all. If you people don’t know what’s going on – the union has overwhelmingly rejected the tentative deal that was set up on Sunday, April 20th, 2008.
This marks the historic moment in a decade that this has done. The last time that back-to-work legislation was introduced was back in the summer of 2002 when the City of Toronto cope with the CUPE workers strike which sends mountains of garbage piled on many places!!!
If the TTC does not follow the new legislation, then all hell will break loose – at a cost. Fines will range from $2,000CDN per individual or $25,000CDN for an organization or union. All unaccounted issues will be referred to a mediator or arbitrator and both sides would have five days to agree on who that individual is, or the government will appoint someone. The union and the TTC were at the bargaining table earlier yesterday, but after 15 minutes the talks broke off.
If the legislation gets the approval and the royal assent, the red rocket (as the TTC system calls it) could be rolling in as early as tonight or Monday morning. Now that all the riders could do is pray. To finish this blog off, I’m leaving you a music video by Marianas Trench. Their song is called “Say Anything”. Hope for the best, guys. I’ll be watching the back-to-work legislation more closely.
