Ontario to get recycling fee in 2009
If you people are planning to get a new TV, computer, cell phone or any electronic device, listen up! Starting in April 2009, the province of Ontario will be ringing in a new recycling fee for TVs, cell phones, cameras, DVD players and other electronics such as stereos. Both producers and importers will pay an extra $10 CDN for a TV and charges for a computer can range from $2 to $13 CDN.
All extra costs will go to a special organization dubbed the “Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment” or WEEE for short. This initative is created by Waste Organization Ontario.
E-waste has start to become a big problem not just here, but everywhere around the world. Most of the e-waste has toxic chemicals such as lead and other properties. That’s why the Ontario government is taking drastic action to reduce the number of E-waste on going to our landfills. Similiar initiatives have been set up in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia.
Along with the new fees, new depots will be set up to allow people to conveniently drop off their used electronics and from there, there will be disposed in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
