What Kevin Lyman can learn about Gerrit de Boer’s experience
With the Warped Tour “officially” being held at Downsview Park, it seems that massive people are going to be packed in the thousands. The problem is will the Warped Tour suffer the same effects as it had on World Youth Day back in 2002? Well, i’ll tell you. Gerrit de Boer, the owner of the Idomo furniture store suffered some substantial losses to his business after as many of 32,000 metric litres of raw sewage has flooded his basement during the World Youth Day festivities back in July 2002. The store was closed as a result and it took up to six months to have all the sewage cleaned out and everything well ventilated. The store did not open until January of 2003. The costs range between from $12 million and $14 million in 2003 dollars.
Five months after the stores reopening, Gerrit de Boer has another concern in his hands - a SARS benefit concert featuring the Rolling Stones. de Boer and his owners are scrambling what to do to prevent from his store from a repeat occurrence as it had for World Youth Day back in 2002, so acting as night watchmen, de Boer and his owners spent tirelessly for two days guarding their store from any potential attack. This time, the occurrence didn’t happen. Mr. de Boer, if you are reading my blog right now as I speak, what a interesting ordeal you guys had lived upon. I wonder how will you guys deal with this year with the Warped Tour being held at Downsview Park, along with Edgefest (sponsored by the Edge 102 radio station). If you want to know how to get to Downsview Park by Public Transit, please go here. For my flashback page featuring the store’s owner, please click here.
If Mr. Lyman were to read my blog right now as I speak, he will probably learn the lessons that Mr. de Boer had faced during World Youth Day back in 2002. Hopefully, organizers at the Warped Tour are planning to develop a plan for all businesses within the vicinity of the venue. Presales are now taking place at http://www.musictoday.com. However, the presale site is listed in U.S. dollars, but comes with a bonus. One of them is a CD compilation featuring the artists’ of this years Warped Tour. If you decided to wait for the general sales via TicketMaster, they will take place this Friday. I wonder how people in Barrie will feel about their substantial loss of the Warped Tour not being held in their home turf. It’s anyone’s guess.

My time on seeing AVA in Toronto, Emerald Ash Borer quarantine in place for whole City of Toronto

Hey guys,
Simon here again for another blog posting. Last night, I finally got my opportunity to see Angels and Airwaves at the Kool haus in Toronto. It was an awesome great time and I was filled with joy on that night. My sister went with me as well and I also got my opportunity to see my facebook friends who were at the concert as well. Chris B., Kevin T., James B., just to name a few. My sitser also hanged out with two Yankee friends from New York State who were at the concert that night (My friend Chris B. also came from New York State) and we had a very great time. I managed to took a few pictures of Angels and Airwaves along with the other supporting acts such as The Color Fred and Ace Enders. The Color Fred by the way, is Fred Mascherino’s own project since he left the band called Taking Back Sunday. I really like his music to some extent, but I mainly concentrate on Angels and Airwaves. Despite this, I had an awesome great time.

Changing gears, I was reading an article on the Globe and Mail today about the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) had imposed a city wide quarantine limitng the movement of ash tree materials to prevent the further spread of the Emerald ash borer beetle. There were some mixed views aboutit. Mayor David Miller quote, “The federal government’s action in forcing cities to pay for control of this pest I find unacceptable,”
CFIA officials note that the quarantine complies with U.S.-style standards - county-wide controls, in which in the case Toronto ends up being a municipal border.
“It’s a federal interest in ensuring that [the ash borer] doesn’t go across the country. It’s their treaty that they’ve signed, it’s exactly the kind of place where they could be supporting cities,”
However, Mr. Miller states that he is well supported on the battle against the beetle. “We will do what is asked, we didn’t need an order,We’re active, we value our trees, and we’re very, very worried about it.”
There should be also some signs notifying motorists that they are entering a regulated area. They cannot take out the materials or they will face a stiff penality or prosecution. That’s what my opinion states.
A city forester also states that removing the ash trees either the tree is infested with the beetle or not will cost upwards of $40 Million CDN. A mature tree would also cost $2,000 CDN each to remove. My concern now is that the beetle will soon cross the Durham Region and if Regional Council doesn’t have a plan in place to combat this particular beetle, then the results will be enormous. Note to Roger Anderson: build a plan on combating the beetle, now.
I’ll try to find road signs indicating that you are leaving/entering the quarantine zone if I have a chance.

Warped Tour 2008 coming to Toronto , GO Transit to raise fares 15 cents

I was logging in to my Facebook today until something came to my attention: The 2008 Vans Warped Tour is coming to Toronto and this time - it’s personal. The tour will be held at Downsview Park on July 19th, 2008. Although the Warped Tour website hasn’t confirmed as of yet, there’s a slight possibility that they will change it - to the fans dismay. Either it’s going to be a different site in Toronto or as always in Barrie (either Park Place or Burl’s Creek Park as the organizers had planned).
It seems that my blog posting might have contributed to the tour being held at Downsview Park. To my surprise, I was pleased with the fans demands. They don’t want to drive all the way to Barrie just to see the tour and spending the whole day listening to some Punk Rock performances. Most of the people who drive to Barrie either has friends or prefer to stay at a hotel. With the Warped Tour being held within Toronto city limits, getting the tour is very easy - if you have the knowledge of reading transit maps!
Downsview Park is situated at a former Canadian Forces base in Toronto. The land is owned by the Federal Government and is now a urban park. To get to Downsview Park, you have to take the TTC subway on the Yonge-University-Spadina line to Downsview station. There are many transit routes that serve the park, but one TTC bus route, the 101 Parc Downsview Park goes directly to the park - however it’s a seasonal route. I would highly recommend boarding this bus route if the Warped Tour is planned to be at the park. If you are coming from York Region, take the Viva Orange or Viva Purple bus to York University. Transfer to the 101 TTC bus. However, there’s one catch - you might have to pay two separate fares in this case (from VIVA to TTC).
This event listing from Tourism Toronto’s website explains explicitly:
July 19, 2008
Warped Tour, Downsview Park
www.downsviewpark.ca
An exciting touring music and extreme sports festival as it rolls into Downsview Park. This event is for the music enthusiast as over 100 bands will play throughout the day on multiple stages. Downsview Park is a unique four season urban recreational green space developed according to the principles of environmental, economic and social sustainability. The park reflects Canada’s mosaic brilliance and celebrates its past, present and future accomplishments.
I hope that my dream will finally come true. I’ve waited for 4 to 5 years on having the Warped Tour to play within Toronto city limits.
Still with transit, GO Transit is looking for a $.15 CDN per ride increase (for an adult fare) - pending a vote by the GO Transit board this Friday. If the vote goes ahead, it would mean your monthly pass will cost $195 CDN. For a 10-ride adult ticket, it will cost $54.75 CDN - that’s $1.25 CDN more from $53.50CDN. This also applies to discount fares. It will be two years since GO increased its fares. The factors on the fare increase is the new services provided by GO include: the newly expanded train service to Barrie, new buses on the Highway 407 and Lakeshore corridors and most of all - inflation. Rising energy costs are the factor of the fare increase.
Despite the fare increases, GO Transit remains a reliable way to go to work, school or play. As for the Warped Tour, I wonder if Kevin Lyman will comply with the Downsview Park offer….

2003 – SARS benefit concerts: part 1
SIMON: SARS or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome also known as atypical pneumonia is a very contagious respiratory disease that claimed almost 800 deaths in China as well as some in Toronto. In 2003, Toronto had suffered a massive outbreak of SARS, which contributed to 43 deaths in the city and translated to a slump of tourism in the city. However, many benefit concerts were taking place for the city to revitalize the entire image of the city. It’s all in our two part flashback series on SARS benefit concerts in Toronto. On this day on June 21st, 2003, this first SARS benefit concert features mainly Canadian artists. Here’s Liam Swick with that report.
[Cut to fans lining up at the Skydome gate]
LIAM SWICK: Countless fans lined up for hours at both the Skydome and Air Canada Centre as the Concert for Toronto concert is held at both venues. Initial reports that the tickets for the concerts at both venues were sold out, but management decided to sell another block of tickets.
[Cut to the report talking to one of the fans]
LIAM: Which artist or artists did you see tonight?
FAN #1: Avril Lavigne.
FAN #2: Sum 41.
FAN #3: Swollen Members.
FAN #4: Sum 41 and Avril Lavigne.
MOTHER OF FAN #4: I have a punk rocker who loves those artists and she couldn’t resist them!!!!
[Cut to Avril Lavigne performing on stage at the Skydome]
LIAM: At the Skydome, Sum 41 along with Avril Lavigne, Swollen Members, Barenaked Ladies, Out Lady Peace and the Tragically Hip performed in front of a big audience. [Cut to Jann Arden and clips of various other artists performing at the Air Canada Centre] At the Air Canada Centre meanwhile, Jann Arden along with Diana Krall, Sarah McLachlan, Glenn Lewis and Remy Shand performed. Both concerts were shown via different satellite feed meaning that fans at the Skydome could watch a performance at the A.C.C., while fans at the A.C.C. do the opposite. My colleague, Jerry Bohen brought his grandfather Neil to the Air Canada Centre to see the great experience.
[Cut to a colleague with his grandfather]
JERRY BOHEN: While I’m a great fan of the Tragically Hip, Jann Arden, Sum 41 and Avril Lavigne, my father is a great fan of Jann Arden. Is that right, dad?
NEIL BOHEN: Yes! Jann’s songs remind me of my life as I grew up over my childhood years and reliving the past. As a result I almost cried….other than that, this is one performance I will remember.
[Cut to Sum 41 performing at the Skydome]
LIAM: Back at the Skydome, Sum 41 pleases fans that their performance will be a memorable one. [Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley talks to the fans] [Cut to Barenaked Ladies covered with medical masks talking to the crowd] But the funniest part of the evening was the Barenaked Ladies; they started off the show – with a funny twist. The entire concert at both venues lasted for six hours. [Cut to screaming fans outside the concert venue] After the party’s over, they decided to sing along a line of their favourite songs by their favourite artists as they prance all the way the Union Station, where the majority of concert goers live in the 905 area and such. [Cut to reporter outside] Now at this time, management of the concert have not yet decided when to provide a special broadcast of the performance live on national TV nor they haven’t provide a plan on releasing the entire concert all on DVD. However management told us that the concert they had organized will be a moment they won’t forget. Proceeds of the ticket sales will go to SARS research. On the other hand, the concert had provided a morale boost to Toronto’s devastating tourist industry – and they had a long way to go. For Newswatch, I’m Liam Swick reporting at Union Station in Toronto.
SIMON: I was among of the people who attended the concert on that June day in 2003. After the success of the concert, Roots, a Canadian clothing company managed to sell the “I love T.O.” t-shirts and many related merchandise to that at all of their stores in the Toronto Area, which I am wearing right now. The shirt is slightly wrinkled and accumulated with dust now, but those were the memories I won’t forget. Proceeds of the clothing were contributed to SARS research. As for the plan to release for the entire concert on DVD, nothing has turned out to this day. David “Brownsound” Bakash, one of the members of Sum 41 seen in that report had since left Sum 41 back in May 2006 and now he is in his own band called the Brown Brigade. Deryck Whibley also seen in that report, married Avril Lavigne back in July 2006. The two are currently living in Los Angeles, California. Next week on Flashback, part 2 of our SARS benefit concert feature. The Rolling Stones can’t get enough satisfaction as they rock Toronto’s Downsview Park for a concert dubbed “SARSStock”.
McGuinty sends hostile message to TDSB about black-focused schools, Kevin Lyman tells Vancouverites that Warped Tour is not playing this year in YVR

The issue behind black-focused schools still erupt and it will likely to do so for some time until the TDSB (Toronto District School Board) obeys Dalton McGunity’s message telling them to stop starting black-focused schools. This story is like the “Young and the Restless” to me. This story came after the TDSB came in favour on starting a pilot project on black-focused schools and this has angered some people, even Dalton McGuinty the premier of Ontario and most of all, Kathleen Wynne the minister of education. McGunity gave a message to all Torontonians about the issue. This is what he said in an interview: “The good news for Torontonians is they have now 18 months … to put a stop to this,”
Still, the opposition criticizes Dalton McGuinty for being a “hypocrite”. John Tory, the Conservative leader for Toronto (who currently doesn’t have a seat in the legislature at the moment) told in an interview that the board made a honest mistake. He still criticize Mcguinty for not taking any action “to back up his own words”. This reminds me about Tory’s plan to provide funding to faith-based schools, which a number of large people greatly opposed at. McGunity is not prepared to put a stop on black-focused schools, but he’s also against the plan at all.
The government will not fund the project set up by the TDSB, which is valued at $850,000 CDN (or $855,260 US using the rate of $1 CAD = $1.00619USD at the time of the posting of this blog). It’s up to the school board to fend for themselves, despite suffering an deficit of $41 Million CDN ($41,253,710 US or roughly £435,000 GBP).
By all means, this is all about segreation. We don’t want to happen all over again 40 or 50 years ago, when there was a clash about white people and coloured people in the United States. That’s when the late-Martin Luther King stepped in and change the way how African-Americans deal with the way of life. We don’t want a similar scenario happen in Canada, ever.
Changing gears, I had stumbled an article on the Warped Tour website posted by the founder of the tour, Kevin Lyman. He announced that there weren’t unable to secure a venue for the Vancouver date of the 2008 Vans Warped Tour. This marks the 3rd time that the Warped Tour wasn’t held in Vancouver in 7 years. The only times that the tour wasn’t held in Vancouver was in 2000 and 2001. This had dismayed many Vancouverites who think that the tour is a “lifeblood” of the Vancouver music scene, but others think that management has gone too far. I felt sorry for all of those Vancouverities. Now it’s up to them to go down to Seattle, Washington (2 hours away) for the Warped Tour date or Calgary, Alberta (8 to 10 hours by car!!!). To see the official statement from Mr. Lyman, please read there: http://www.warpedtour.com/warpedtour/news.asp?id=1437587
The dates for the Warped Tour meanwhile have been posted. You can do so here: http://www.warpedtour.com/warpedtour/news.asp?id=1437579
While the drama about black-focused schools continue and at the same time that Vancouverites felt sad about the Warped Tour not being held in their city, I’m just going to relax at home away from the bad weather we had today. Keep warm, guys!!!

As for when Tickets will go on sale, they will go on sale on February 2nd, 2008. I’m not sure if when the Canadian dates will follow, but keep posted. As for me going to see Panic at the Disco on the Toronto date, I absolutely have no plans at this point to go to the tour, as I’m making some short-term plans on going to the Warped Tour later this summer. As for Calgary and Edmonton being left out of those dates, most of the fans of the bands were left in dismay as they totally forget those cities. It seems that the fans are fighting to have those bands perform in their hometowns, but to a lesser extent.
Panic at the Disco’s new album “Pretty. Odd.” will be released on March 25th, 2008.

Panic at the Disco to headline 2008 Honda Civic Tour!

Well guys, the wait is finally over. After many months of speculation, Panic at the Disco will be the next headliners for the 2008 Honda Civic Tour. This popular band from Las Vegas has got some new challenges facing them, after many rumours from many fan-based message boards scoured over the internet and finding out which band(s) will be headlining the tour. The tour will kick off on April 10 and conclude on June 14, 2008. The details are still very sketchy at this point, but keep watching this blog for further updates.
For me, I really like those guys. My favourites are “I write sins not tragedies” and “But it’s better if you do”. There are some dispute on what type of music PATD does, but I consider them as an combination of rock, emo, pop-punk, dance and electronica. I hope that the upcoming tour will make stops in Canada as well. I’m guessing that the band should perform in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal (the same stops that the last HCT tour did last year).
This is what Brendon Urie quote from an interview, “We’re taking advice from Fall Out Boy, who headlined the Honda Civic Tour last year, on how to make this year’s tour even better, Those guys set the bar pretty high, but we’re really looking forward to hitting the road again and are definitely up for the challenge.”
It’s not that Panic at the Disco will be headlining the tour - Motion City Soundtrack and The Hush Sound will make the bill and join with PATD on the tour. However, the details are not yet confirmed until February. Until then, keep your prayers coming…Oh and Panic’s new album is slated to be released on March 25th, 2008.
(UPDATE: January 12th, 2008) This is what the custom Honda Civic looks like (source: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=124263#2) :

UPDATE (9:18PM Eastern Standard Time): It appears that the Honda Civic Tour official website has been updated to show the latest information of all the details of the band headlining the tour. Until then, more information will be available soon to follow. It also appears that PATD dropped the “!” moniker off their band name.
UPDATE (January 26th, 2008 - 7:10PM Eastern Standard Time): the Honda Civic Tour dates have been released. It can be founded here: http://simontonekham.wordpress.com/2008/01/25/honda-civic-tour-dates-announced/
To close off this blog, I’m leaving you a few music videos by Panic at the Disco. I hope you guys will enjoy.
I write sins not tragedies:

Why I can’t go to the Warped Tour
I’ve been thinking on this issue for almost four to five years now and I’m studying a possibility on going to the Vans Warped Tour (a popular music tour of the summer in which mainly punk rock bands perform) and I spent my time studying the various factors on going to the Warped Tour. These factors are divided into three topics:
Financial: Costs associated on going to the Warped Tour including Ticket prices, transportation costs and buying merchandise (clothing, music CDs, etc…..). I have to budget on what I intend to spend to avoid being broke.
Physical:There is some serious involvement on attending the Warped Tour. For me, Moshing remains the dangerous and controversa concern on going to the Warped Tour. To add insult to injury, there lots of serious dust blowing at the tour. People try to protect their eyes and their entire face from the dust on a nice and sunny day. If I end up with someone I don’t know, I will be caught in a tangled web of people stuck in a middle of a mosh pit in the middle of nowhere.
Logistical: Over the years, the use of reliable transport links to the Warped Tour have diminished over the years and since the Warped Tour’s inception in 1994, the demand of punk/alternative rock music has exponentially increased over the past 13 to 14 years, at a rate of 200%! The first time that the Warped Tour has established in Canada was back in 1995. Toronto was the first Canadian stop of the tour, followed by Vancouver, then Calgary and then Montreal.
The Toronto date has changed over the years. Currently, it’s being held in Barrie at Park Place (formerly Molson Park) for the past 5 years. This year’s Warped Tour was supposed to be held back in the Toronto for the first time in 6 years, but then it was supposed to be held at a park called Burls Creek Park, then finally the event venue was finally shaken up - staying where it belongs - Park Place.
Here’s a chronological years of when the Warped Tour was held in Toronto:
August 23, 1995 - Canadian National Exhibition Grounds
July 27, 1996 - Molsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario (about 75 km from Toronto)
July 24, 1998 - The Docks
July 24, 1999 - The Docks
July 22, 2000 - The Docks
August 11, 2001 - Rogers Centre (formerly the Skydome)
The first time that the venue was moved to Barrie was in August of 2002. From my experience the city doesn’t like an idea on having the tour in their backyard! I was able to hear the Warped Tour experience when I was in Vancouver back in the summer of 2004, but I didn’t attend the tour. The reason is that my uncle and aunt is going to be mad at me on going to an event without their permission…..
My demand in punk music has been increased over the years. Think of this way: Punk Music is like a “commodity”, like the price of Electricity, Petroleum, Grains, Minerals and Uranium. That’s my humble opinion. Anyways, I was thinking for an idea on releasing my own budget of my future plans of getting more and more punk rock music. My own dream plan is under consideration and it’s going to be released sometime in the new year. This is going to be modeled after the MoveOntario 2020 plan (a plan on improving public transit in the Greater Toronto Area) or something similar.
In the past, Greyhound coaches shuttle Warped Tour goers to the concert venue from Yorkdale Terminal for a certain price (either one way or return trips), but this year, this is unlikely and the fact concert goers have to rely on GO Transit and the (iffy, but not user friendly) transit system in Barrie.
As for my dream plan on increasing the demand in punk music in my interests, I’m still brainstorming though…..

My time on seeing Hedley Live @ Much
Hey guys,
Well I had an awesome great time last night in Toronto. I finally got an opportunity to see Hedley for the Live@Much! I was trying to leave early from my college until my last class of the day got cancelled suddenly. My classmates told me that the professor has to rush home because her security alarm got off and the police arrived at her place. In the end, it was probably a false alarm (or something like that). From my experience, this gives me a big “break” on my attempt to get off early. In the end, it was worth it.
Anyways, I went to take the GO train to Downtown Toronto and managed to walk around Queen Street in the Fashion District. I managed to meet Lillian (who I had known for sometime) at Neon and she really likes my new hoodie that my sister bought for me and it was very comfortable! The hoodie is a Famous Stars and Straps hoodie and it’s a black zip-up hoodie complete with an “F” at the front. From my experience, it seems that my search is over. I was smiling.
Changing gears, I went to MuchMusic HQ at approximately 6:00p.m. and an hour later they start to let us in group by group because we don’t have any wristbands. Only the people were able to enjoy the full experience of seeing the band up front has to get wristbands. The show starts at 8:00p.m. and the fans were screaming so wildly!!!
I was able to see Dave Rosin got tattooed on his lips and most importantly, something really attracted me a little, a Dominatrix suddenly appeared out of nowhere and she showed Leah to slap a whip on Jacob Hoggard’s ass!!! I literally laughed at this and I managed to get this on tape! It’s up on Youtube and you can view it here:

I also managed to capture a few shots of that Dominatrix and here they are:

Anyways, I managed to snatch one of the member’s of Hedley’s autographs - I finally got Tommy Mac’s autograph and I was thrilled to capture that. After the live broadcast is finished, the guys performed two songs. I didn’t stay for that so I briefly make my sortie home. I managed to tag up with the woman who was dressed as a Dominatrix and I told her that she looked great in the show. I asked her a secret that I’m attracted to Dominatrices. She smiled at me and she said, “You’re secret is safe with me.” I should have shown her a funny video on my iPod that was nothing to do with that, but I have to make my dash home.
If that woman was dress as a Dominatrix and Leah Miller were to read my blog post right now, they will simply laugh at me and feel complemented on what I had state. After all, it’s simply a free world.
Note to Leah Miller: Only a fool breaks the two second rule.
